Woodland Gleanings

£45.00

Product description

There is no author attributed to this volume but it is assumed to be Robert Tyas because he was the editor of "The Sentiment of Flowers" and this is the only description here given of the present author. There are numerous engravings of individual named trees with examples of their leaves and flowers. Each has a plain paper guard. All seem to be present with one worrying oddity: the leaves catkins and nuts of the walnut are, in the index, stated to be the frontispiece but here they are in the allotted page on p 153. Each tree gets a description and, often, an appropriate quoted verse.

Charles Tile 1837 hardback with no DJ. Green cloth covered boards with Cowthorpe Oak as a gilt decoration on the front and gilt lettering to spine. There has been some damp damage with a little cockling of the cloth cover over the rear board and an ugly stain on the rear end papers which does not, thankfully, seem to have affected the remainder of the book. There is a little wear to the top and bottom of the spine. No other marks and the binding is good. Tiny vertical tear of the top of the front hinge externally. All edges of the text block are in gilt. Index and four pages of advertisements at the end.

A very nice book, particularly taking into account its age
