Works of Theophile Gautier in 9 volumes

£70.00

Product description

Incomplete set of nine volumes of the works of Theophile Gautier translated into English. There should be 12 volumes to complete the set. Volumes 1, 2 and 12 are missing. All are in a good condition given their age but Volume 6 has some damage to the lower end of the spine. All the title plates on the spines have faded and are not readable. The blue cloth covers are also a little faded. The pages were uncut but the top edges are gilded, side and lower edges are rather grubby. All the corners are a little bumped. Internally all the volumes are clean, bright and tightly bound. Each volume has a different frontispiece protected with tissue and each has a very attractively decorated title page. The text was translated and edited by Professor F C DeSumichrast of Harvard University. On the back of the title page is a paragraph which reads 'Edition de luxe This edition of the works of Theophile Gautier, printed for subscribers only, is limited to one thousand numbered sets, of which this is No. .......................'. None of the volumes is numbered in this space. Published in 1901 by the C T Brainard Publishing Co. of Boston and New York.
