A bibliography on vernacular architecture

£7.99

Product description

Vernacular architecture, the scientific study of regional building characteristics, has only recently been recognised as a distinct branch of architectural history. Its beginnings in Britain were linked to the foundation of the Vernacular Architecture Group in 1952 which drew together specialists and enthusiasts from a number of disciplines. One of the first objectives of the Group was the compilation and publication of a proper bibliography of the subject so that the present volume -the first in its field-is the product of many years of research. The entries run to the end of 1970 and are classified to cover general, regional and local studies; rural and urban buildings; construction techniques and building materials; and essential references on the social and economic background to the study of Vernacular Architecture. In pulling together a widely-scattered literature, much of it combed from normally inaccessible local periodicals, the bibliography performs a valuable service. its interest is practical as well as academic. As more buildings of regional character are allowed to decay or are demolished to make way for new developments, the need to record and preserve the architectural heritage in the light of established standards becomes a joint task for planners and conservationists. The Vernacular Architecture Group recruits its members widely, from several professions, and from abroad as well as in Britain. This is a book for architects, librarians and local historians, as well as those who regard the study of building tradition as a key element in the understanding of the past for its own sake and as a legacy in the present. The Bibliography has been edited for the Vernacular Architecture Group by Sir Robert de Zouche Hall who served as its secretary from 1959-72 and who is now its president.

Excellent pages, a little edge and D/J wear.
