Artistry of the Mentally Ill by Hans Prinzhorn Springer Verlag 1995

£175.00

Product description

More than 70 years after its first publication in German, Artistry of the Mentally Ill by Hans Prinzhorn remains a classic concerning the borderland between psychiatry and art, illness and self-expression. The drawings, paintings and sculptures collected and analyzed by Prinzhorn are the products of artistically untrained and unpracticed persons - inmates of asylums. This book represents one of the first attempts to analyze the artistic work of the mentally ill. Completely spontaneous they are in sharp contrast to more recent collections which are the products of occupational therapy or psychotherapy. Before Prinzhorn, works by the mentally ill were considered curiosities, never the subject of scientific or artistic analysis. However, to Prinzhorn they were "the eruptions of an universal human creative urge" counteracting the autistic tendencies toward isolation. Prinzhorn demonstrates surprising parallels between his collection and those by children, and between ancient Greek cultures and primitive ones.

Oxfam Shop Cardiff

Our shop is situated in the Heath area of Cardiff, we work out of the Retail premises on Whitchurch Road, where Oxfam has been for over 35 years. Our role online, as with all Oxfam shops is to raise money in order to overcome poverty and suffering around the world including here in Wales. We could not achieve that without precious volunteer support which we are extremely grateful for. We need more of this valuable support and ask,if you live in or around Cardiff, to get in touch on: oxfamshopf5302@oxfam.org.uk. If you are able to spare a morning or afternoon each week with us, that would be fantastic, we offer the opportunity to expand your skills in many areas, work for one of the biggest charitable organisations in the world and importantly, you would be directly helping the poor and needy around the globe.
