Dawn of the Golden Age, Northern Netherlandish Art, 1580-1620. RIJKS museum Amsterdam.

Between 1580 and 1620, the visual arts underwent an extraordinary development in the Northern Netherlands. A period of stagnation was followed by an astonishing flowering of Mannerism around 1590. The first decades of the 17th century subsequently showed a great diversity and richness in the arts, heralding the glories of the Golden Age.
This lavishly illustrated catalogue contains detailed discussions of some 350 works in various media, as well as five penetrating essays. Dawn of the Golden Age will undoubtedly become a standard work on this fascinating period in the history of Dutch art.
