Farewell to an idea

£35.00

Product description

This work presents T.J. Clark's perspective on the history of modern art. It asks whether modernism and socialism depended on each other for their vitality, and argues that modernism was an extreme answer to an extreme condition. The book begins with Jacques-Louis David, painting at the height of the Terror in 1793, then leaps forward to Pissarro a hundred years later, followed by Cezanne and contemporaries. Clark concludes with a reading of Pollock's tragic version of abstraction and proposes a new set of terms to describe avant-garde art in New York after 1945.
Text and illustrations appear bright and unmarked. Very light signs of shelfwear; ink dedication on title page. Boards and DJ lightly worn.
