Francesco Bartolzzi (1727-1815) was a Printmaker and Draughtsman who was born in Florence and studied Fine Art at the Academy in the city On reaching the age of eighteen he settled in Venice and studied printing and engraving techniques with Joseph Wagner. He came to the attention of English gentleman who were visiting Venice on the Grand Tour. Bartolozzi moved to London in 1764. He quickly became recognised as the pre-eminent stipple engraver of his time, and became Engraver to the King. Bartolozzi was a founder member (1768) of the Royal Academy. He left England in 1802 to become Director of the Academy of Fine Art in Lisbon where he died.
