Sir Joshua Reynolds

£29.99

Product description

Sub title "The Acquisition of Genius"
A book produced to complement an exhibition of the work of Sir Joshua which was mounted in Plymouth in 2009/10. It focuses on two aspects of his long and distinguished career - his work for patrons geographically located in the South West and particularly in his native Plymouth, and his own collection of old master prints and drawings. Because of his lectures, given as part of his duties as first President of the Royal Academy, we possess an unusual amount of information about the intellectual underpinning of his work. He was of the "1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" school, emphasising the necessity for unceasing discipline and work. His collection of the works of others showed that he practised what he preached.
Ten pages of biography 46 pages of West Country Portraits. The next section is The Road to the Royal Academy, again copiously illustrated but now of people in and around London and this continues with a section entitled Capturing Celebrity. Of great interest is the section on Sir Joshua as a Collector with illustrations of a large number of the prints and drawings which he accumulated. The final section is on Reynolds' legacy, the effect his influence had down the years.
There are extensive notes.

Sansom and Co 2009. Soft card covers. No marks and good binding. In "as new" condition.

Beautifully illustrated. A peach of a book.
