The Nile Boat or Glimpses of the Land of Egypt

£19.99

Product description

This book is in dreadful condition but might just appeal to somebody seeking a challenge or who covets the illustrations.
Bell and Daldy hardback with no DJ. There is no date but it is "a new edition". The dedication opposite the title page is dated 6th November 1876. The boards are covered in purple cloth with an elaborate gilt pattern which is badly bleached. The boards are bevelled. Internally the book is essentially disbound with multiple pages lying free. All the printed pages and the woodblock illustrations are present. All edges are in gilt. The Frontispiece with its transparency cover is present as is the (detached) title page. There are supposed to be 33 steel engravings and 32 of them are present; the one of the Pyramids opposite page 100 is missing. Many of the illustrations, while of fine detail, are marred by foxing of their margins. There are two fine fold out panoramas, one of ancient Alexandria and one of Modern Alexandria. The engravings have attributions - C Cousen, W Hughes, G G Storm E Brandard, A Willmore J C Bentley, & E Challis.
Enough to bring tears to a bibliophile's eye - but at this price?
