The Original Eye: Arbiters of 20th Century Taste

£9.99

Product description

The Original Eye: Arbiters of 20th Century Taste

Prentice Hall; 1st Edtion edition (1 May 1984)

Hardback book with dust jacket in good condition, jacket in fair condition. Jacket has signs of ageing, especially along the edges, as well as bending and scuff marks. Hard cover underneath is clean and good condition other than some small white marks on the bottom of the front cover. Internal pages clean and intact, in exception of a yellow rubber mark on the cover sheet.

The ten personalities in this book are the arbiters who have exercised their original eye in the hundred years since the impersonal eye of the camera began to document shifts in taste. They are: Robert de Montesquiou, Sergei Diaghilev, Elsie de Wolfe, Alfred Stieglitz, Filippo Marinetti, Cecil Beaton, Marie-Laure de Noailles, Peggy Guggenheim, Andy Warhol, and Malcolm McLaren.

The Original Eye is a book to look at, focusing on the similarities and the contrasts between the diverse personalities; but also urges us to participate in style as an intellectual and moral act. A lavish selection of rare and curious pictures is therefore included, revealing the continual metamorphosis of 20th century taste while underscoring the biographical nature of each chapter.
