£50.00

Product description

Third Edition, published in 1786, printed for T. Cadell in the Strand.

The Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson, LL.D., during the Last Twenty Years of his Life, by Hesther Lynch Piozzi (nee Thrale), was first published on 26 March 1786. A contemporary account of Johnson, it was based on the various notes and anecdotes that Thrale kept in her Thraliana. Thrale wrote the work in Italy while she lived there for three years after marrying Gabriel Piozzi.

Hester Lynch Thrale (born Hester Lynch Salusbury and after her second marriage, Hester Lynch Piozzi) (1741 – 1821) was a British diarist, author, and patron of the arts. Her diaries and correspondence are an important source of information about Samuel Johnson and 18th-century life.

Former owner's bookplate on inside cover. List of names on frontispiece. Pages are foxed with rough cut ages. Binding is tight and holding together very well. Apart from foxing pages are clean and printing clear.
