Arnold Bennett & Stoke-on-Trent by Ernest J.D Warrillow

£45.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Arnold Bennett was an English novelist, playwright, and essayist, born in Hanley (27th May 1867), Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Many of the locations in Clayhanger and other Bennett novels are based in "The five towns" and correspond to actual locations in and around the Potteries district of North Staffordshire. This book is both a sort of biography and a look at the cultural history of Stoke-on-Trent where Warrillow explores locations and buildings described by Bennett in his books. The book goes delves into Arnold Bennett's books and explains specific lines and their cultural significance. The book features 70 black and white pictures on photo paper throughout the book featuring locations in Stoke-on-Trent and events in Bennett's life. This book completes a trilogy of historical works by the author on the City of Stoke-on-Trent.

The book is in excellent condition. The dust jacket is present, however has split at the spine and is very damaged. The dust jacket does feature a black and white image of Arnold Bennett with the words '"I'm going to be a writer."' The jacket has managed to preserve the book perfectly and so the cover only has some very lightly faded areas at the top. The cover is hard, black leather and has gilded letters across the spine. The binding is very tight as though never read. The pages are unmarked and crisp with only a small amount of brown fading at the tops and edges, though this doesn't affect readability.

This detailed biography and cultural history would be perfect for someone who has enjoyed Arnold Bennett's short stories and is looking to delve deeper into the stories.
