Bismarck - The Man and the Statesman

£6.99

Product description

Eighth impression, August 1978.

Bismarck has been made the symbol of many causes since his death in 1898. Contemporaries saw him as the creator of national Germany. During the first World War he was branded as the man of "blood and iron" and accused of teaching the Germans to worship Power. Under the Weimar republic he became the apostle of conservatism, opposing the advance of democracy. Under Hitler he was transformed into the great exponent of moderation and, in foreign affairs, of good relations with Russia. Now again German historians are arguing whether Bismarck led Germany on the wrong path or indeed what path he took at all.

A. J. P. Taylor has gone back to the original sources and has treated Bismarck as a man of his time instead of measuring him by the standards of the present day. Earlier biographies of Bismarck concentrated on the period of unification and paid only superficial attention to the years between 1871 and 1890.

There is slight fading to the inside edges of the dust cover, otherwise the book is clean throughout for its age.
