Cornwallis and the War of Independence

£24.99

Product description

Published in 1970 by Faber and Faber, this tells the story of the first Marquis Cornwallis. He surrendered the British forces at Yorktown thus ending the American war independence. His next role was as Governor General of India, his career continued with him then becoming Governor General of Ireland. Finally he was involved in negotiating a short-lived peace with France during the Napoleonic Wars.

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis KG (1738 – 1805), styled Viscount Brome between 1753 and 1762 and known as The Earl Cornwallis between 1762 and 1792, was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. In the United States and the United Kingdom he is best remembered as one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence. His surrender in 1781 to a combined American and French force at the Siege of Yorktown ended significant hostilities in North America. He also served as a civil and military governor in Ireland and India; in both places he brought about significant changes, including the Act of Union in Ireland, and the Cornwallis Code and the Permanent Settlement in India.

A well-written book with several photographs, maps and a useful index.

There is a sticker on the inside front cover reading: 'from the library of John Browning'.
Covers have some rubbing wear and marks. There is also some foxing to the outside of the pages but the pages themselves seem to be in a good clean condition and the binding is tight.
