Dust jacket is a little scuffed and is price clipped. Edges of pages are foxed but inside is clean.
In this book Mrs Pilgrim sets out to explore the facts and possibilities surrounding the one serious love affair which Jane Austen is known to have had and which hitherto in the words of her niece has been 'nameless and dateless'.
Third hand reports deriving from Jane Austen's sister variously suggest different identities for the gentleman who was so smitten with Jane but no explanation has accorded with all the known references. Basically all the stories have in common is that, while on holiday in the West Country, Jane and her sister met a gentleman who much admired Jane and he was expected to come to their home but instead news was brought of his death.
By examining the novels themselves and by combining them with other contemporary records Mrs Pilgrim has come to a conclusion which will first astound and then absorb the reader, and which will shed a new light on their reading of the novels.
