About this item
This is the famous biography of Fitzroy Maclean which encompasses three distinct episodes. Initially it is an account of pre-war Russia where he served as a diplomat. At the outbreak of war he resigned from the diplomatic service because he could not otherwise take part in the conflict. On the day of his resignation he went to the nearest recruiting centre and enrolled as a private in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. (He was commissioned from the ranks and ended the war as a Brigadier). He then fought in the Western desert in the North African campaign before, finally, going to Yugoslavia to aid the partisans there. In all three situations his flair and daring were displayed and he received, after the war, decorations from Russia, Yugoslavia, France, Croatia and the UK. He also served as a Member of Parliament and held office as a junior in the War Office.
Jonathan Cape hardback with intact DJ. There is very minimal edge wear of the DJ and a 1 cm vertical tear of the lower edge near the spine on the rear . Owner's name in ink on reverse of front board. Good binding and no other marks. B&W illustrations and a fold-out map opposite p 183 which has been inaccurately folded back so that there is now some wear of the lower edge. The similar map of Asia at the front of the book is pristine.
A rousing and justly famous account of a quite extraordinary man and his quite extraordinary life.
