Final Flight

£29.99

About this item

Book covers are worn and rather creased but are complete and untorn; book edges are soiled from use. However the text is clean and unmarked except for one place on p 7 and one error corrected on p 119. The spine is partially detached from the text pages.

This book appears to be the author's own copy as it has his address label and his name on the fly title page. There are also some other remarks in ink on the same page.

John Hartnell-Beavis was shot down in 1943 and imprisoned in Stalag Luft III as a prisoner of war. He was there in March 1944 when 'The Great Escape' took place from that prison and later helped to carve the names of those who had died on the memorial erected near to the camp.

This volume is divided into two books; Book I begins with Hartnell-Beavis's final flight on July 25th 1943 and tells the story of his capture and imprisonment and his final liberation in 1945. Book II relates the story of the events leading up to his capture, the beginning of his flying career and his experiences as a pilot in the early years of the second world war.

Oxfam Bookshop Lymington

Lymington is on the South coast, bordering on the New Forest National Park which was created as a Royal Forest in 1079 by William the Conqueror, and first recorded as 'Nova Foresta' in the Doomsday Book in 1086. Our Oxfam Shop at 73, The High Street is in a lovely Georgian building, the tallest in Lymington. The elegant Georgian buildings lining the wide main street were built mostly for merchants in the local salt trade. The famous Saturday market brings the town to life with its variety of stalls. The area is renowned for outdoor pursuits, including camping, sailing, windsurfing, and surfing, as well as forest walks and horse riding.
