George Perkins Marsh

£29.99

Product description

SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR: Black cloth covered book with gilt titles on the spine. There is no bumping to the spine but there is a mark along the lower part of the front cover which looks like the fabric has been rubbed. The dust jacket is in very good condition showing only slight signs of wear on the back cover. Internally the book is clean, bright and tightly bound. It is illustrated with monochrome drawings, etchings and photographs. A very heavy book.
G.P. Marsh wrote what William Cronon calls in his foreword, one of America's three most important environmental texts, Man and Nature (1864) (the other two were Silent Spring and Sand County Almanac). Man and Nature argued that deforestation led to the demise of civilisation: that because the ancients cut down their trees, there was erosion, droughts and floods which led to the end of the Greek and Roman cultures.
