Half-Hours with Shakespeare

£24.99

Product description

Half-Hours with Shakespeare is an elementary school textbook, published in 1910. It has a black and white reproduction of William Shakespeare, protected with tissue paper, as a frontis piece and a number of black and white photographic plates throughout. There are also some full-page line drawings and pages of music. At the back, are notes on the playscript extracts and advertisements for other textbooks by the same publisher.

The book has a 'paper back' covered in red cloth (buckram), typical of early to mid-20th century school textbooks, with the title and author's name in black on the front and spine. While the red coloration is good on front and back, it is faded on the spine. The black lettering on the front is clear, but there is mild creasing to the flexible spine effecting the lettering. There is foxing on the end papers, fly leaves, page edges and throughout the text block. At the top left of the free end paper, a previous owner has signed their name, 'C. Davis', in ink. The end papers and hinges are secure, but the binding is loose with some splitting in the gutters.

The corners of the buckram cover are bumped and creased, while the end papers and pages have small dog ears. There is a small indentation at the bottom left of the cover, through to the preface, which is visible particularly on the frontis piece. Overall the book is in good condition, considering that it would probably have been used as a pupil textbook.
