Volume I of a biography of Maurice Pascal Alers Hankey, 1st Baron Hankey GCB, GCMG, GCVO, PC, FRS (1 April 1877 – 26 January 1963) who was a British civil servant who gained prominence as First Cabinet Secretary and later made the rare transition from the civil service to ministerial office. He is best known as the highly efficient top aide to Prime Minister David Lloyd George and the War Cabinet that directed Britain in the First World War. Used hardback in good condition, with d/j (un price clipped) in similar. Externally the book is clean and bright with little sign of use. One or two spots to the foredges of the textblock, which intrude slightly into the pages concerned, and a small drink stain here which also intrudes by a few mm into the last pages of the index. Internally clean for the most part,; slightly grubby mark on the half title page where a pencil annotation has been rubbed out; drink stain on page 83 with some associated wrinkling on that and the next page. Binding good. D/j shows some darkening to the top and bottom of the front and to the rear. Some wear to the edges and corners including a small (5mm) closed tear at the front, one (5mm) to the top of the spine and one (1cm) to the top of the rear. internally the d/j has some blue collouration from the boards where these have rubbed at the edges and round the spine.
