Product description

Josephine Butler Flame of Fire
Written by Enid Moberley Bell

Published in 1962 by Constable and Company Ltd
First edition signed by the author

Hardback with paper dust jacket; illustrated
Condition fair; dust jacket in poor condition with some tearing around the edges; pages are clear and legible - slight yellowing of the paper with some foxing visible around the edges of the book.

A biography of Josephine Butler, a 19th century British social reformer, who played a major role in improving conditions for women in education and public health.

From the foreword: "Josephine Butler was perhaps the greatest of all the great Victorian women, greater than even Florence Nightingale, for it was she alone among her contemporaries who appreciated the problem of women's place in society in its most fundamental terms. The relative obscurity in which her name is still shrouded is largely due to the fact that her fight was against prostitution, particularly against its regulation and control by Parliament".
