About this item
1997, 1st Edition burgundy cloth hardback with unclipped dustjacket; 230 pages with b/w plates, bibliography and index; G/G. George II reigned for over 30 years but the literature about him and his consort, Queen Caroline, has been extremely sparing. What exists tends to caricature and belittle George II. John Van Der Kiste's biography sets out to redress this lack and bias with an unprejudiced account of the public and private lives of George II and Queen Caroline in the context of 18th century society and the politics of the age.
His biography describes how George II was fortunate to be served by Prime Ministers Sir Robert Walpole and William Pitt, and was wise enough to leave the business of government to them, at a time when the constitution of England was evolving. It evaluates the abilities of Queen Caroline, a patron of the arts and a political strategist whose death in 1737 was seen as a national calamity. It also appraises George's reign after his wife's death when, over the next 20 years, the Empire was to gain many victories abroad. The family relationships of the royals (including the troublesome relations between King and Prince) are also given consideration.Sutton Publishing Limited, Gloucestershire, England, 1997.
