Anna Kingsford was a leading 19th century women's rights campaigner, anti-vivisectionist, and vegetarian, and one of the first women to obtain a degree in medicine - and without using animals to do so. She founded the Food Reform Society, and was active in the Theosophical Movement. her writing was virtually unkown for over 100 years after her early death at the age of 41 following pneumonia.
