About this item
Gaskell's two volume biography published two years after Charlotte's appallingly early death at thirty-eight. This is a second edition of the book in a small octavo format. The text of both volumes is very clean and nice; the pages are firmly held. The illustrations are: a frontispiece portrait (engraved), and a facsimile of one of Bronte's manuscripts, In volume two a picture of Haworth church and parsonage. The bindings in brown cloth are worn. Volume 1: splits on the joints of the backstrip, the boards are worn but otherwise intact; volume 2: same.
Although quite frank in many places, Gaskell suppressed details of Charlotte's love for Constantin Héger, a married man, on the grounds that it would be too great an affront to contemporary morals and a possible source of distress to Charlotte's still-living friends, father Patrick Brontë and husband. This book is a major source for the hundreds of letters sent by Brontë to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey.
