Men and Memories: Recollections of William Rothenstein

£19.99

Product description

This two-set volume of books by Rothenstein, was published in 1931 by Faber and Faber and is a third impression. The books cover the years 1872-1900 (Volume 1) and 1900-1922 (volume 2). Rothenstein was an English painter, printmaker, draughtsman and writer on art. He is best known for his work as a war artist in both World Wars and as a portrait artist. More than 200 of his portraits of famous people are in the National Portrait Gallery collection. He co-founded the Carfax Gallery that held exhibitions of works of the Camden Town Group. Rothenstein was a Principal at the Royal College of Art from 1920 to 1935 and was knighted in 1931.The books show some signs of wear and tear in terms of foxing to outside edge of pages. Both bear a library stamp of a previous owner on the inside front cover. The hardback cover of volume one shows more wear and tear than volume two in terms of splitting to spine and fraying. Both volumes show bumping to corners and fading to covers. These are a fascinating account of a man's life. Subjects covered include: Rodin in England; Epstein and Eric Gill; Augustus and Ida John; Hampstead Days; The Bodley Head; John Sargent; A Journey to Morocco; Swinburne and Theodore Watts; and much more besides. This is a great set for collectors or those who love art, artists and art history.
