Princesses: The Six Daughters of George III - Signed

£19.99

About this item

Signed, first edition of Fraser's royal biography. Jacket has some minor bumping especially on the spine and page edges have a few small marks.

'Princesses' is the story of the six daughters of George III, whose outwardly repressed lives concealed a world of scandal and intrigue.

On the surface the sisters were busy, accomplished girls, but the real story beneath their composed image was quite different - no one who reads Princesses will ever look in the same way again at the calm, composed women in Gainsborough's portraits. The king may have believed that his six daughters were happy to live celibately with him and Queen Charlotte at Windsor, but secretly, as Flora Fraser's absorbing narrative of royal repression and sexual licence shows, the sisters enjoyed startling freedom. The historical searchlight has been turned with great intensity and sympathy on George III and his family, and the sweep of history between the Regency and Victorian eras. Flora Fraser has written an extraordinary (and surprisingly modern) story with real authority, wit and elegance.

Oxfam Shop Balham

Balham, or 'The Gateway to the South' as Peter Sellers once called it, is a bustling corner of south west London, situated between Clapham and Tooting. The area is well known for its comedy heritage, thanks in no small part to Sellers's sketch, as well as comedy circuit staple The Bedford Arms and famous residents Arthur Smith, Andy Zaltzman and Richard Herring. The area also hosts something of a literary heritage with DBC Pierre having written his Booker prize-winning first novel in Balham. Our bookshop is located on the busy High Road just down the road from the tube station which was bombed in October 1940, an event immortalised in Ian McEwan's Atonement.
