About this item
The inheritor of centuries of tradition brought up in the splendor of one of Britain's finest stately homes, Badminton House, the 10th Duke of Beaufort writes from the heart when he says that 'my feelings for the place...penetrates right into the fibres of my very being, and I am never really happy when I am far away from it for more than a day or two at a time.'
A passionate sportsman, the Duke hunted with his own pack of foxhounds for forty-seven seasons, in this fascinating story of his life, he recalls the famous hunts, his favorite horses and hounds and the 'magic' that is fox hunting.
But his life has also been one of duty. Master of the Horse in three reigns, he held this office for longer than anyone else, taking part in all the great State occasions. He writes with charming directness of his happy childhood at Badminton - an adoring family, friendly servants and the great house itself with its labyrinth of corridors, little staircases and secret corners, all wonderful places for a small boy's amusement. He recounts also stories of the more colourful of his ancestors, of his schooldays, and army life.
As to Badminton house itself, it was here that Queen Mary spent the war years and where, every year, the present members of the Royal Family are welcomed during the Badminton Three-Day event. Started by the Duke in 1949, the Horse Trials give pleasure to countless thousands of people. They also provide British horses and riders with invaluable encouragement and experience, the aim - Olympic Gold medals.
Always, the Duke and Duchess have been happy to share what they have with others, and there memoirs gibe a fascinating insight into a way of life peculiarly English and in many ways, unique even within Britain.
