The letters of John Calmann, 1951-1980

£7.99

Product description

The Letters of John Calman
When he was murdered in 1980, John Calman was an outstanding artbook publisher, at the head of his own firm which he had founded only five years earlier. The remarkable letters in this volume are mostly from the 1960s, when he was working in New York as a journalist, in Europe as a Common Market civil servant, or in London for The Times.
Born into a German-Jewish family of distinction and brought up in England, he was one of the most quick-witted and stimulating of his generation: "voluble, eloquent and epigrammatic in his conversation". Able to speak German, French and Italian, the range of his cultural references was formidable. These letters owe their existence to the importance he attached to friendship and their interest to the breadth of his outlook.
This copy is in very good condition throughout. There is an inscription on the first end paper.
