Wartime Correspondence

£19.99

About this item

The book presents a collection of letters written by Naval Officer Peter Russell Hay Allen to his mother in New Zealand during the early years of the Second World War. Peter Allen was lost with his submarine in the Mediterranean in April 1942. The book is well illustrated with contemporary and modern photographs, cartoons and drawings.

The large format book has a soft plasticised cover but appears to have normal fabric-supported hardback type binding. The mainly grey, red and blue covers are clean and free from damage. The front carries the title and editor in red and black print on a grey background including extracts from a hand-written letter. It also carries a monochrome photograph of Peter Allen and his mother. The mainly red spine carries the title, editor and publisher in white and black print. The grey and blue back carries extracts from letters and a summary of the book in white and blue print together with cartoon of a submarine.

The binding is tight and all pages appear to be clean and free from damage.

Oxfam Bookshop Lymington

Lymington is on the South coast, bordering on the New Forest National Park which was created as a Royal Forest in 1079 by William the Conqueror, and first recorded as 'Nova Foresta' in the Doomsday Book in 1086. Our Oxfam Shop at 73, The High Street is in a lovely Georgian building, the tallest in Lymington. The elegant Georgian buildings lining the wide main street were built mostly for merchants in the local salt trade. The famous Saturday market brings the town to life with its variety of stalls. The area is renowned for outdoor pursuits, including camping, sailing, windsurfing, and surfing, as well as forest walks and horse riding.
