When this book was published Methods-Time Measurement (MTM) had become a universal tool of management within the space of the fifteen years since its conception. MTM was concisely defined as ".... a procedure which analyses nay manual operation or method into the basic motions required to perform it, and assigns to each motion a predetermined time standard which is determined by the nature of the motion and the conditions under which it is made". The carefully researched technique summed up in that brief definition has added untold millions to the value of output in companies throughout the world. In short, MTM has proved to be a universal tool of scientific management, valuable in any situation where it is necessary to have a clear understanding of the work method which is or could be used for doing a job, and an accurate measurement of the time required to do it.
