Eight children want to buy a present for their mother but have fivepence too little. In return for letting them off the fivepence, the shop-owner asks them to run an errand for him. And so the adventure starts.
"Chapter I - Six noses were pressed against the window and six breaths misted over the lower half of the glass. "It doesn't say!", chorused Paddy, Anne, June, Buster, Helen, and Jennifer, while Philip and Rosemary said impatiently, "But all the others do."
"It doesn't," said Helen, detaching herself from the window. "Look for yourselves. All the others have got tickets but that one."
"When I can get near the window -------" said Philip loftily. Being fifteen and the eldset he felt it beneath his dignity to shove the others up to make room for him."
The book has no dust-jacket, a few marks on the front cover and a little foxing on the inside pages.
