Joey and her friends from the Chalet School, Simone, Frieda and Marie are on holiday together one summer in a place called The Witchens. They discover to their surprise and pleasure someone their age living next door, their invalid neighbour Phoebe the daughter of a famous cellist. She is crippled by arthritis and is being harassed by a spoilt girl of 19, the splendidly-named Zephyr Burthill's who is determined to possess the Phoebe's late father's precious cello.
