John Gilpin

£19.99

Product description

Ernest Nister of London produced an illustrated version of John Gilpin in the 1890s; though undated, this book appears to be that edition.
The volume has a picture board front with illustration of John Gilpin on a rearing grey horse, the rear board is plain scarlet and the spine is green cloth. The edges and corners of the boards are badly scuffed; the stitching is now rather loose so the front cover and webbing are partially detached from the text block. Several pages are also partially detached but they are all present though age toned and a little foxed in places. The front free end paper bears a dedication: "To Donald with best wishes for Christmas 1907 from Auntie Lucy & Auntie Alice".

Despite the toning, all text is clear and the numerous illustrations are charming. There are many b/w drawings and several vividly coloured full page plates.
