Evelyn Smith (1885 - 1928) was a professional authoress and was able to maintain herself entirely by her writing. Almost all the other female school story writers of this period were either supported by family members or resorted to some sort of paid employment such as teaching. Her many novels about the adventures of teenage schoolgirls include ‘Val Forrest in the Fifth’ ‘Septima at School’,and 'The Small Sixth Form'. Smith was one of a series of women writers who popularised this genre in the decades following the First World War up until the 1950s .
