The Struwwelpeter Alphabet

£14.99

Product description

Der Struwwelpeter (1845) (or Shockheaded Peter) is a German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way.

The tone and concept of this book was adopted by many other Victorian authors. This 1900 publication is an illustrated alphabet of various adult characters, all treated in satirical ways. Some are actual personalities (Kipling, Kitchener, Salisbury, Zola). Some are archetypes (religious, nobility, barristers, military types.) All are depicted in short sharp verses and wonderful colour drawings, by F.Carruthers Gould, who was a renowned caricaturist and political cartoonist.

Covers are grubby and have tape repairs on the inside. The contents are remarkably clean.
