This rare first printing copy is complete with the colophon and the Scribner's "A" on the copyright page. It was published on 7th September 1950 at $3.00 and was one of 750,000 copies. Internally this copy is clean and tightly bound. There is a previous owner's ink inscription on the front free endpaper dated October 1950. The black boards have the author's signature stamped in gold on the front cover and are in clean and good condition with only minimal shelfwear to the edges. The dustjacket is not price clipped. There is a drawing of Venice on the front cover illustrated by A.Ivancich in white, yellow and orange on a black background. A photograph of Hemingway appears on the back cover by Paul Radkai. The condition of the dustjacket is fair/good with the majority of it still intact but there is some chipping to the edges and corners. There is a closed tear at top of spine along crease to back cover of approx. 5cm. On the top right hand corner of the front cover there is another closed tear and creasing of approx. 2cm. The dustjacket is also fairly grubby and shelfworn particularly along the edges and the spine. Please see photos for more details.
