Ballads Ancient And Modern

£6.99

About this item

Edited by Oliphant Smeaton, Ballads Ancient and Modern is a collection of poetry by different authors such as Sir Andrew Barton, Sir Walter Scott, Mrs Browning and more. The work of all these authors is from the late 1800's to early 1900's. Smeaton has written the introduction, notes and glossary to this book, which was published probably in 1930. The book is in good condition and has an embroided front cover with the title written in gold.
There is a frontis piece in black and white of Sir Philip Sidney (1554 - 1586) reclining in a leisurely fashion!
The book contains ancient and modern poetry with some great verses.
For example, Sir James the Ross wrote in the book
"My father's will must be obey'd
Nought boots me to withstand:
Some fairer maid, in beauty is bloom,
Shall bless thee with her hand."
There is the previous owners inscription on the inside front cover (see image).
There is some detachment of the spine to the main body of text, however the pages are tightly bound and intact.
For anyone who enjoys classic English verse, this collection is an essential and beautiful edition to their library.
