Cannon Fodder

£60.00

Product description

The first English edition, limited to 500 copies signed by the translators. Very good condition paperback. Unread. Minimal shelf wear. Tight binding. Internally clean and bright.

The first chapter of Céline's largely autobiographical lost novel, describing the experiences of a raw recruits' first evening of enrolment (based on the author's experiences with the 12th armoured Cavalry), plus a four-page extract from his 1913 dairy. The remainder of the novel was destroyed (or perhaps 'liberated') when Céline's flat was ransacked following the Liberation of France in 1944. This surviving opening fragment was first published in 1948 and in bookform a year later but was not translated into English for a further forty years. Uncommon.
