Désirée [1953, First Edition]

£14.99

Product description

First Edition, published in 1953 by William Heinemann. Annemarie Selinko's best-selling novel, translated by Arnold bender and EW Dickes.

This riveting true-life tale comes to life in diary form, giving readers an inside glimpse at the young Napoleon and his family. Désirée is enchanted by the young officer, and he asks her to marry him. But he must leave for Paris, where he meets his eventual wife Josephine. A heartbroken Désirée is unsure she'll ever find anyone again. A love story, but so much more, Désirée is the tale of a simple merchant's daughter who ends up with a kind of royalty she never expected.

All the passions and intrigues of Bonaparte's court are seen through the eyes of a silk merchant's daughter from Marseilles, a young woman who became Napoleon's fiancée and, ultimately, the Queen of Sweden.

No dust-jacket. The cover is a lightly faded with some light bumping to the corners. Other than the occasional small mark the internal pages are in a good clean condition with sound binding. The front end paper is missing and there is the start of a split along the inner edge of the front binding.
