A further chapter in the life of Joe Garton, the captain of a liner on the New Zealand run. Coupled with all the daily worries of defective engines, tiresome passengers, suspected wrong-doers, is the memory of an act of disloyalty to a brother officer committed during the war. He tried to atone by taking numerous risks in submarines and emerged with a distinguished record. During this voyage his past and present become merged and his ability to deal with the unexpected is again put to the test.
