This is a first edition copy of Maori and Settler by famous and somewhat controversial author G.A. Henty. Like most of his work, it now appears somewhat jingoistic and gives a one sided view of the war.
The Renshaws emigrate to New Zealand during the period of the war with the natives. Wilfrid, a strong, self-reliant, courageous lad, is the mainstay of the household. He has for his friend Mr. Atherton, a botanist and naturalist of herculean strength and unfailing nerve and humor. In the adventures among the Maoris, there are many breathless moments in which the odds seem hopelessly against the party, but they succeed in establishing themselves happily in one of the pleasant New Zealand valleys. The book has signs of shelf wear, minor fading to illustration on spine, slight discolouration of gilt edging to text block and inside the front cover, the presentation plate has been forcibly removed which has left scuffing to inside cover. Outside cover remains in very good condition.
This book contains detailed illustrations by Alfred Pearse, also the publisher's catalogue at the back.
