Men at Axlir

Product description

FIRST EDITION: Blue cloth cover with gilt titles on the spine, in very good condition. The dust jacket is discoloured on the back and the top edge is lightly nibbled but there are no tears and the front is in a very good condition. Internally the book is clean, bright and tightly bound. This novel is based on a true account of the crime of a young girl and her brother which was exploited in the feud between two county sheriffs in the eighteenth-century Danish colony of Iceland, and spans the darkest years of the country's history. This was a period of terrible famine and sickness, culminating in the apocalyptic eruptions of 1783 which threatened to depopulate a country where life was already barely more than subsistence.
