Robert and Helen is a novel by Elizabeth Jenkins first published in 1944, making this is a first edition.
The boards are bound in plain green cloth, except for the spine which has the book name and author embossed in gold along its length. The top corners are slightly bumped, but those on the bottom are more pronounced and creased. Both head and tail cap are a little creased and frayed, but not torn. The front board has an ink stain near the hinge and a diagonal scratch from top left to bottom right corner. There is white pitting on both front and back, with the latter being more prominent.
The endpapers are light faded, bubbled and creased, through age rather than misuse. The front has a cardboard library ticket holder and date stamp sheet, headed 'RAF Station, Sherburn-in-Elmet, Station Library. This book must be returned by the last date entered below.' It is date stamped from 17th August 1944 to 15th February 1945. There is a stain behind the date stamp sheet, possibly due to the adhesive. The hinge, between the flypapers, is broken. The rear endpapers, flysheets and hinge are plain and unbroken.
The board edges are barely shelf-worn and the page edges are light faded. The page surfaces are faded, with some foxing and dog-ears.
