There were three survivors from the airliner which crashed into Robinson's island. They were not particularly welcome. Robinson was a spiritual recluse.
On the island of the snow white beach there was death, the puzzle of secret caves, a small urchin named Miguel, and Bluebell the cat who learned to play quite skillful ping-pong. When January Marlow, who tells the story, and her fellow survivors are nursed back to health, several distinct worlds begin to collide.
