This is the last book written by the Booker prize winning author, Penelope Fitzgerald, published five years before her death in 2000.

The novel is based on the life of Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772-1801) before he became famous under the name Novalis when he became a practitioner of German Romanticism. It covers the years from 1790 to 1797 when von Hardenberg was a student of history, philosophy and law at the universities of Jena, Leipzig and Wittenberg, and before he embarked on his professional life.

This is a folio society edition with seven illustrations by James Albon and an introduction by Neel Mukherjee.

The slip case is missing but the book itself is in an excellent condition making this a real collector's piece.
