The Hoodwinkers

£20.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

This is the 1963 Children's Book Club edition, with dust cover illustrated by Leslie Wood, and illustrations inside by Geoffrey Wittam. Monica Edwards was a British author who mainly wrote children's books. The Hoodwinkers, like many of her other books, focuses around outdoor activities and adventure, the characters in the book demonstrate resourcefulness and ingenuity. The characters are well established and have many layers, their relationships and the realness of the book bring this book alive.

Blurb:
'In this new Romney Marsh story Tamzin, Meryon, Rissa and Roger discover that the whiskery old rogue Jim Decks is once again up to his nefarious activities. And this time he is hoodwinking innocent Americans who, with their love of "history", are convinced that Jim's old boat belonged to William the Conqueror. Jim must obviously be wooed away from these money-making schemes to a more honest line of business. The discovery by Rissa of the drowned village of old Winklesea gives them all an idea. Could not Jim take trippers down to see the ruins charging them so much per head? But how can they afford an engine for the boat? And can Jim be persuaded to adopt the idea? The way to make the money is soon solved and with no lack of adventures. But persuading Jim is another matter; that is until Hookey Galley gets the same idea...'

Although this book has been around for more than half a century it is in brilliant condition. The dust cover has served the book well and has received general wear and tear. This includes a few small tears and some age spots, as well as this the cover does have an aged vintage look to it. On the top left of the end-page, one of the owners has written their name, however this is covered by the dust cover and is so neat it almost looks like part of the map. On the other side of the end-page they have written a few numbers and letters (this can be seen on photo 3). The pages are aged around the edges but pristine everywhere else, all of the pages are intact and sturdy, there has been no water damage or spills on the pages.

This would be a brilliant book for a collector and will most probably increase in value over the years, especially considering its condition. However this book would also be great for anyone who would like to appreciate its illustration and read the story.
