The iconic hostel founded in 1766 was bought by Edmond Aubourg (artist, collector) from his aunt Mme Dubosc in 1865. It was then renamed Hotel de France to become the Hostellerie des vieux Plats because of its passion for earthenware and has a worldwide reputation! The Hostellerie des vieux plats, originally a stage coach inn, is a popular place to visit and is marked by the traces of many illustrious people: artists; Writers (G. De Maupassant, A. Gide, M. Leblanc, V. Hugo, J.P. Sartre, A. Camus); Musicians (R. Wagner, G. Fauré, C. Gounod); Painters (C. Monet); Kings and queens (The King of the Belgians, The Queen of Spain); Of policies (F. Faure, R. Coty, Churchill).
These two volumes in French will tell you more about the history, anecdotes about the many famous guests that have visited and their entries in the famous guestbook.
