Housewives' own Medical Practitioner

£19.99

Product description

This book describes itself as "a Private Medical Text Book for Young Wives, with Advice on the tactful management of Husband, home, Children and Helpers; also containing some valuable and reliable maternity formulae" but would appear to be rather a Christian Tract with several outmoded views, the actual medical information scanty and in many cases hard to believe, for instance when the author describes "curing cancer" with violet leaf tea.
(To be fair, in America there are accounts of Native Americans utilising violet for cancer treatment, and the American National Cancer Institute has been made aware of the folk uses of violets for cancer since at least the 1950s. (Erichson-Brown, 1979)).

In very good condition, quarter bound in dark green with a deep burgundy leather spine bearing gilt lettering. Text block edges are also speckled in burgundy. All text clear, frontispiece is of Metchley Abbey Ladies' College. Undated but a previous owner has pencilled in 1914 on the ffep. facing that on the front fixed end paper is a neat dedication: "To Fanny Stockwell with best wishes from her friend K. N."
