A Short History of the English People - Volume I

£40.00

Product description

This is the first illustrated edition of the book first published in four volumes in 1875. The book has burgundy cloth-covered boards and spine. The front has a gilt imprint of the book title and a decorative mace including the royal lion and unicorn images. Below the mace is the author's name in ribbon format. At the top and bottom of the front cover are straight and rippled lines also in gilt. The spine has the book title and author and publisher names all written in gilt. The rear cover has an embossed logo of the publisher, MacMillan. The book has some bumping to the corners and there is some shelf wear. However, these are not considerable judging by the age and size of the book. The yellow endpapers are well-glued to the boards and well-stitched to the spine. The pages are reasonably well-cut and have gilt edges all around. The bottom and side edges are also showing signs of foxing. The faces of the pages are showing some signs of discolouration with some foxing. The book has many black and white drawings throughout including some lithographs. There are also several colour drawings protected by pages of tissue paper. The tissue pages are heavily foxed in all cases. On page 241 there is also a facsimile of the Great Charter (the "Magna Carta"). Page xv/xvi has a fold in the top corner that has now smoothed out. Page 321/322 has a very small tear near the bottom corner. On the front fixed endpaper there is the signature, written in ink, of presumably a previous owner (A N Mackenzie).
