Excellent study of the architecture of what used to be known as East Germany. Published in 1961 at the hight of the cold war it interprets architectural form from the point of view of the prevalent ideology of the time and gives a historical record of the mindset and zeitgiest of the times. Here is a short passage taken from the Author's Introductory paragraph. "Architectural monuments determine the countenance of a country. They mark the features of a town and form it's landscape. Nature finds in them significant enhancement and crowning adornment. Buildings are the result of human labour... Churches and castles, palaces and mansions testify to the skill and craftsmanship of previous generation's..."
